At MEC we pride ourselves on environmental stewardship and sustainability and energy management is a major component. We have instituted and developed numerous long term energy reduction projects and initiatives that have resulted in an 11.6% reduction in electricity consumption since 2011 and a 43.3% reduction in water consumption since 2011. Through company-wide initiatives and specific building achievements like LEED®-EB:OM, BOMA BESt, the RCO Waste Minimization Awards, Race-to-Reduce, saveONenergy, International Property Awards and Smart Commute Champion, we have managed and continue to meet and exceed current regulations with regards to MOE, MOL and OHS guidelines in a positive and mindful manner.
AT MEC, WE CONSIDER OURSELVES TO BE COMMUNITY LEADERS IN SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY THROUGH NUMEROUS EVENTS, PROGRAMS AND COMMITMENTS:
- We are the first existing building in Mississauga to achieve LEED®-EB:OM Gold Certification;
- We are a founding and supporting member of Smart Commute Mississauga since April 2006;
- We directly impact job creation, offer internships;
- We participate in social events and charitable work;
- We have an established Tenant Green Team committee;
- Supporting member of The Canadian Peregrine Foundation: In cooperation with the foundation, we host a nesting pair of falcons, who have, annually, produced 4-5 hatchlings for the past 10 years. We inaugurate this with an annual banding ceremony where the MEC community and local schools are invited to celebrate and learn about the repopulation of this endangered species. - Greening Corporate Grounds: Since 2010 we have been a part of the Credit Valley Conservation and Ontario Trillium Foundation on their Greening Corporate Grounds. We have enhanced our landscaping, as well as raised awareness and tenant engagement. We were also a feature Case Study in their 2012 Manual.
- Sustainable procurement: we utilize environmentally-friendly products and services to reflect our best management practices.
- Recycling, e-waste collection and on-site organic composting program, car pooling, EV plug in stations, free bicycle rental, Earth Week activities, free annual flu shot clinic – these are some of the many sustainable programs we have in place at MEC.
